Carrot or ice-cream?
My wife, Maria.
Absolutely loves vegetables!
She’s never stops trying to get the kids to eat healthier.
Especially vegetables.
Today at lunch she said:
“Sadly, a doctors job isn’t to tell you to eat more veg
(when you are young) so you can be healthier when you are older”.
True.
Doctors deal with consequences and do an amazing work.
It got me thinking:
How in the UK men neglect their health, in general.
How Portuguese visit their doctors way more than in the UK
In fact, about 11% of Portuguese visit their doctor 6 times a year.
And in the UK this number is only about 6%.
And yet, amazingly, the UK is ranked 10th, in the most healthy nations of Europe in 2023.
Sweden ranks 1st.
We delegate way too much responsibility (for our own health) to health professionals.
Don’t you think?
An expert panel from the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences in the USA, wrote in 1999:
“Medical errors kill from 44,000 to 98,000 patients.
More than 7,000 patients die as a result of “medication errors”.
(Every year).
Actually, things have got worse.
According to Dr. Don Berwick’s research published in the British Medical Journal in 2016:
“Medical errors could be the third leading cause of death in the US,
claiming 250000 deaths.”
(Every year).
(Willie King, had his foot amputated before having the correct one removed).
Add Europe to this, and the rest of the world, you get a worrying picture.
But, we could all do more for ourselves, in advance.
To reduce the workload on health workers.
Simple things.
Like eating more veg:-)
Maria will never quit trying!
Some of it makes an impact on the kids.
It’s easier said than done, though.
She’d said her bit about doctors.
Then our daughter (secretly) went to the freezer and grabbed…
an ice cream!
To your health.
